Pull the Plug

Going in to the election of 2000, a lot of people, from both sides of the aisle, were stating that Bush would do great things domestically, but they feared that his foreign policies would lag. It turned out to be quite the opposite.

Sure, Bush cut taxes, but his administration has increased government spending more than any other administration, including the Clintons. I know that a lot of his spending is for the military, which we need. But he is also throwing money into his "Hispandering"* projects in order to buy votes for Republicans, taking a page right out of the Democratic National Committee's playbook.

In the summer of 2005, there was a media fiasco involving a woman who had been in a vegetative state for 15 years. Her name was Terry Schiavo, and her husband claimed that she had told him, though there was no living will, that she didn't want to be kept alive on life support should such an instance arise. He wanted to grant her wishes.

In spite of this revelation, her family fought to keep her alive by keeping the feeding tube in her. It launched a nationwide debate over whether to pull the tube or keep it in. Right-to-life advocates joined in the mix trying to push their agenda, and it became a huge fiasco. Her wishes were finally granted when the courts decided her feeding tube was to be pulled and she was allowed to pass on.

I understand that Bush's domestic policies and the Schiavo matter don't exactly relate, but this cartoon came to mind during the time period.
