Who could forget the scandal involving Dan Rather – who in 2000 and 2004 exhibited no love lost for George W. Bush – and the forged National Guards documents that claimed Dubya did not show up for duty in the Texas Air National Guard back in the 1970s. What actually happened was that Bush had already served his required time, but that didn't stop the media, especially Dan Rather, from exploiting the story for political gain. CBS News and Dan Rather acquired "official" documents making the claims Bush was AWOL because he didn't report for duty at the scheduled time. Of the documents, one was a letter supposedly signed by Bush's commanding officer at the time. However, this turned out to be a failed attempt by the Left to tarnish Bush's re-election campaign, thanks to some document experts. These document experts noticed that the text in the document looked too finely spaced ("tracking" and "kerning" to those in the print industry) for a document of that time period. Whoever created the forged documents failed to do his research because documents, back then, were not printed on laser printers as they are today. We didn't have Microsoft Word, which auto-tracks the text. Therefore, the text would be awkwardly spaced. The experts – and this was actually discovered by some bloggers – decided to recreate the letter in Microsoft Word and put it in the font called Times New Roman; 12 point to be exact. They then transposed their document with the "official" one and they overlapped perfectly. Another Democratic smear tactic shot to southern side of the religious border. |
